Stop & Smell the Garlic!!!!

Untitled design-2 copy 10Living in North Plains means one thing in August, ELEPHANT GARLIC FESTIVAL WEEKEND!!!!!  This year’s festival will be August 9, 10 & 11th and it will be filled with lots of garlic, live music, a car show and more.

For those who have never attended the garlic festival before it is held at the Jessie Mays Community Park in North Plains, OR.  Once you arrive in North Plains you will notice that many people park on the neighborhood streets.  However if you like there is preferred parking which is located at Glencoe and Pacific Ave.  Preferred parking cost $5, however a free shuttle is available to take you to the festival grounds with your payed parking.  If you are taking the shuttle the times of operation are Friday 12PM-7PM, Saturday 10AM-7PM, and Sunday 10AM – 6PM.  In addition, to the preferred parking area there is parking available for disabled guests located at 10990 NW 313th Ave. near the intersection at Wascoe.  To gain entry to disabled parking please show your disabled parking placard to demonstrate your eligibility for this free parking area.

Once inside the festival grounds you will get to enjoy numerous booths filled with crafts and garlic, as well as many food vendors.  My family loves to pick up several bulbs of elephant garlic from the vendors to roast (recipe here) and then spread onto bread like butter.  It’s really good, however my family does love garlic.  And speaking of eating garlic you will find my family lined up every night to partake in the Tigard Knights of Columbus fantastic chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans.  If that doesn’t sound good, there is everything from elephant ears to garlic ice cream or enjoy some garlic beer (I promise there’s more than just garlic beer) while listening to some great music.

Oh, and if you happen to be a book lover, make sure you hit up The Friends of the North Plains Library  annual used book sale.  They will be located inside the Jessie Mays Community Hall and will be open on Friday, August 9th from 12-6PM, Saturday, August 10th from 10-6PM and Sunday August 11th from 10-3 PM.

It’s fun to see everyone enjoying this great event which my community takes pride in, and loves to host.  I hope to see you there, and remember FUN STINKS!
